Puck's Farm
Check out the new video walkthrough of this location right here!!
youtube
Let's begin this week's location by taking a look at some exterior photos of this farm!!
Down a long driveway away from the busy city we find this farm that was previously filled with sounds of nature and the laughter of children. Once a local tourist attraction for families, they had pony rides, a petting zoo and even educational workshops. It was called Puck's Farm.
A jack of all trades Barry Friedman was a record producer, photographer, publicist, farmer and even a circus owner. But his love for music is what drove his career for most of his life.
Born in California in 1941, his first jobs were working in circuses as well as a photographer. After living abroad for a period he returned to California in 1962, where he produced a radio show, while also working as a publicist where he handled a press conference for The Beatles.
He met Stephen Stills while working at the Troubadour club and helped him form the group Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young, among others. Becoming their manager, he organised a tour with The Byrds and ended up working with them on future projects as well.
He was also working as a producer with acts such as Paul Butterfield, Kaleidoscope and the Holy Modal Rounders. In the late 60s, he was also an A&R man for the record label Elektra.
Friedman changed his name to Frazier Mohawk and moved to Northern California to build a studio and mountain retreat funded by Elektra. The centre ended up being more of a party house than anything else and would soon close.
Frazier met and married musician Sandra Elayne Hurvitz who later changed her name to Essra Mohawk. Frazier would produce her second album 'Primordial Lovers', which Rolling Stone magazine would later declare in 1977 as "one of the best 25 albums ever made".
He became burnt out by the music business and moved to Canada in the early 70s where he started a circus called Puck’s Canadian Travelling Circus. Later, Frazier would buy a farm in the country where he would live off the land, and run an education and entertainment centre for families related to farming. It was a well known attraction in the area for many years.
Things came around again full circle when in the 90s he decided to build a recording studio in the barn called National Treasures Recording Studio, which became one of the best in the region. Bruce Cockburn being one of the most notable musicians to have used the studio.
Frazier would pass away at the age of 70. It seems as though things took a turn for the worse around this time, reviews about the facility were mostly negative with a 2 star average rating on Trip Advisor. Puck's Farm would close soon after and the property was last used as a tree farm before closing for good a few years ago.
Maybe this farm will be used again one day but until then the buildings sit, hidden by the overgrowth and slowly rotting away.

Abandonment refers to the process when human activity or management ceases in an area, allowing nature to regain control. Following abandonment, an ecosystem undergoes natural changes in species composition and structure, often developing into a forest over time — a phenomenon called succession.
Over the last century, land abandonment has increased, particularly in parts of Europe. This is driven by factors like rural depopulation, as people move to cities, and modernization in agriculture and forestry, favoring high-intensity practices and making many traditional, low-intensity techniques obsolete.
This change is affecting our biodiversity. And while less human intervention might seem beneficial, this isn’t always the case.

The Flower House
Check out the new video for this hoarding property here!!
youtube
Let's start off this week's location by taking a look at some of the owner's sculptures, along with a few of the smaller items found throughout the property!!
Down a long overgrown driveway lies this incredible abandoned farmhouse. Surrounded by farm fields this property has been sitting for at least 20 years untouched and nature truly has taken over. The house and land are full of possessions that the owners Paul and Claire left behind after their deaths.
They were married in 1947 and Paul is of Ukrainian descent.
Paul was a farmer and has spent his retirement years making sculptures as a way to try and stay young by keeping his mind busy. He would scavenge the local dump for things he could use in his pieces as well as repurposing his old farming machinery. The driveway was lined with windmills and steel flower sculptures, which were all products of his creativity. He also liked to make things that moved such as swings made from various found objects.
If you dig deeper into the overgrowth you would see that he was a bit of a hoarder of large items, with cars from as early as the 50s, a hospital gurney and even an old porcelain autopsy table!
But the collections didn't stop in the yard, Claire also enjoyed collecting and one of the rooms in the house was filled with her obsession.
The farm was a popular spot for passersby to stop and take photos, it was a bit of a tourist attraction. But this also brought some unwanted attention to his property, with thieves targeting his farm. He erected a fence and put in a gate and cemented his sculptures into the ground along the fenceline.
Claire passed away in 1999 followed by her husband Paul in 2003. The property has sat abandoned ever since and stands as a memorial to their lives.
I will leave you with a quote from Paul: "What keeps a mind workin', is what keeps the body goin' eh"

Never forget where your roots are ,never forget because one day it will be your turn to go and when you do make sure you left your mark for others to emulate. The pioneers lead a very hard and dangerous life to trail-blaze a path for future generations to follow.Dealing with the inclement weather was tough ,looking for water sources ,and food as they crossed the plains ,many stayed and farmed the land ,but many perished trying their best.If you dig you will find stories galore of the trials and tribulations of those souls who brave nature to create a country for you. So be humble and true, respect your elders and your family. Take a trip across the plain states and see for yourself how it feels ,standing alone on a field on a hot and humid summer day when thunderstorms and lightning hit the land .Feel and imagine the struggle they went through. Then go home and never forget your roots.Never forget your country.Words by Sergio GuymanProust.
